Grenen in Skagen
Grenen is a unique natural phenomenon where the two seas Skagerak and Kattegat meet and the waves culminate with each other.
It is an amazing experience to stand on the outermost tip of Jutland and watch the waves from the two seas clash and break over Skagen's Reef. Grenen is a fascinating destination consisting of deposited sand and gravel that has been transported by the strong currents, and over the last 100 years the sea wall has grown 1 km in length. The large expanse of beach at the far end of Grenen is in constant motion, regularly creating lagoon lakes that attract children playing and wading birds, but due to the strong and dangerous currents, swimming is strictly prohibited. South of the tip of Grenen is a compass rose that actually shows that Grenen points east.
The landscape around Grenen is a protected nature reserve and home to a wealth of wildlife: seals sunbathe leisurely on the beach amidst the crowds of tourists, while the area is the place in Denmark where most bird species can be observed, especially birds of prey in spring. There are plenty of opportunities to explore away from the tourist flow, which is concentrated between the car park and the tip of Grenen itself. The large beach area on the far side of Grenen outside the dunes is constantly changing in appearance. For example, shallow lagoon lakes appear, which attract wading birds. The plant life is also unique and a classic example of the development of vegetation on new land; incipient dune formations and lush green dune lichens are just some examples.
Follow one of the Grenen Trail routes and learn more about both nature and the history of the place. There are four hiking trails starting from the Grenen car park, one of which is paved and suitable for bikes, wheelchairs and prams. The trails take you to all of Grenen's attractions.
From the car park, from Easter to week 43 you can ride the Sandormen all the way to the tip of Grenen. The ‘Sandormen’ has been taking tourists to Grenen for over 50 years and has become part of the history of the place.
